Siemens “Solid Edge Challenge” Program
Siemens launched the Solid Edge Challenge 2021 for Latin America. Every day, the market demands more innovative solutions, lower costs, and higher quality standards. This is why designing and optimizing components plays a fundamental role in developing new products. We invite you to showcase your skills and test your abilities by participating in our latest design challenge.

What is our challenge?
The “Solid Edge Challenge 2021” involves designing a mechanism to solve a real-world problem in industry. The goal is to encourage skill and creativity using the Solid Edge 2020 portfolio.
We are collaborating with WashTech to challenge participants to solve a real industrial problem. Founded in 2015, WashTech specializes in designing and manufacturing industrial cleaning machines to address the difficulties and challenges of customers worldwide, mainly in the automotive and aerospace sectors.
WashTech machines are designed to meet the specific needs of end customers. There are three main factors driving the design: (1) the type of parts to be cleaned, (2) the shape of the parts, and (3) the solvent required during the cleaning process.
This design challenge aims to stimulate and encourage innovation for new products using the technology available today.
- First prize: a one-year Solid Edge Premium license, a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse, and an iPad Mini.
- Second prize: a one-year Solid Edge Premium license and a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse.
- Third prize: a one-year Solid Edge Premium license and a smartwatch.
Challenge Rules
- Designs must be created using tools in the Siemens Digital Industries Software Solid Edge portfolio.
- Siemens Digital Industries Software will provide these tools unless you already have access to the software.
- Designs must be original and innovative. Participants must confirm that the design is their own work to avoid copyright violations.
- Winners grant Siemens Digital Industries Software free rights to use their designs for the maximum period permitted by law.
- Anyone not affiliated with Siemens Digital Industries Software or its business partners may participate.
- The same participant can submit more than one design idea.
- Only models submitted within the specified period will be considered.
How the challenge works
For this design challenge, we provide an initial base assembly for you to propose your solution. The base assembly can be seen in the image below.

You must consider the following constraints when developing your solution:
- You cannot modify the usable space on part surfaces.
- You cannot change the initial height on the top face of the “PLATFORM”.
- You cannot change the height on the bottom face of the “UPPER FLOOR”.
- All other parts can be modified according to design needs but must follow the above rules.
- The goal is to create a mechanism to raise the “PLATFORM” until it contacts the “UPPER FLOOR” and then return it to the initial position.
- All parts will be made of 6061-T6 aluminum, except “PLATFORM”, “TOP COUPLING”, and “LOWER COUPLING”, which will be made of 304 stainless steel.
• “UPPER COUPLING” and “LOWER COUPLING” must be attached to a deformation-resistant support.
• Part surfaces correspond to the XY plane of the “INDUSTRIAL ELEVATOR” assembly.
• The “PLATFORM” must weigh 100 kg.
• The “PLATFORM” must accelerate and decelerate between 9.81 m/s² (1G) and 19.61 m/s² (2G).
• The “PLATFORM” must complete the lifting operation within 1 to 2 seconds.
To access standard parts, visit our Part Community page to download standard components. Standard parts are also available online via links in the “Learn” tab of Solid Edge.
Challenge Timeline
The challenge consists of 4 stages:
Stage 1: Registration, Design, and Submission
Stage 1 covers registration, design, and project submission, running from November 5, 2020, to February 2, 2021.
Steps to complete in this stage:
- Design using Solid Edge software. If you don’t have Solid Edge Community, download it for free here.
- Ensure your design meets all previously specified requirements.
- Use as many commercial parts as possible from the online library.
- Verify that your design addresses the given problem with creative solutions.
- Submit 4 screenshots of your model (front view, side view, top view, and isometric view). Save your design for potential finalists who will be contacted to provide the CAD model. Screenshots must not exceed 5 MB.
- Use Microsoft Word to briefly describe your model, your inspiration, and explain your concept (maximum 1 page). Name the file as: <SOLIDEDGECHALLENGE2020 – “YOUR FULL NAME”>
- Submit the 4 screenshots along with the Word file via email to: solid-edge-challenge.sisw@siemens.com
- Email subject line should follow: <SOLIDEDGECHALLENGE2020 – “YOUR FULL NAME”>
- Share publicly on your social media and invite friends to participate using hashtag: #SolidEdgeChallenge2020
The submission deadline is February 2, 2021. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered. Key notes to ensure valid submission:
- Complete online registration
- Submit on time
- Share publicly on social media
- Email must include:
- 4 model screenshots
- Word file with description and explanation
Stage 2: Design Evaluation
Stage 2 involves evaluating all submissions from February 8 to February 12, 2021. Designs will be assessed by a panel from Siemens DISW and WashTech based on the following criteria:
| Criteria | Maximum Score |
| Originality of design idea (Creativity) | 5 |
| Use of Solid Edge software | 5 |
| Effectiveness in solving the problem | 5 |
| Application of engineering principles | 5 |
| Model rationale | 5 |
20 designs will advance to the next stage, where 3D models will be required for detailed evaluation.
Stage 3: Announcement of Finalists
On February 17, 2021, 5 finalist designs will be posted publicly on Siemens DI Software social media (LinkedIn and Twitter). Final ranking will be determined by “likes”, and finalists will be contacted by February 24, 2021.
Stage 4: Results and Awards
Winners will be announced on February 25, 2021, via Siemens DI Software social media, and contacted individually.
