YOUNG ENGINEER IN ZIMBABWE EXPLORES GENERATIVE DESIGN CAPABILITIES OF SOLID EDGE

Written by David Chadwick

Wisdom James Murombo is passionate about engineering and has explored using new techniques to optimize strength and weight in design. Wisdom is a third-year student in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Optimizing Design Using Generative Design

For design projects assigned to NUST students, Wisdom was motivated to think beyond conventional solutions and explore the use of generative design in Solid Edge. “I have always been interested in engineering and design,” Wisdom said. “My father runs a diesel engine maintenance workshop, and I learned many practical design techniques by helping him in the workshop. But I always wondered if the design of the engine parts I worked with could be improved.”

Wisdom continued, “I am using Solid Edge with its generative design capabilities to investigate whether I can manufacture components that are as light and efficient as possible while still maintaining the required strength.”

One of his recent projects was designing an engine mount to use in his father’s workshop: “I came up with the initial concept design and added the loads the mount would need to support. Solid Edge’s generative design capabilities showed me where material could be reduced without affecting the mount’s strength.”

Designing a COVID-19 Diagnostic Support System

Wisdom’s talent extends into mechanical design projects as well as software and AI development. Recently, he collaborated with another student to design an X-ray image processing system to support rapid COVID-19 diagnosis. Wisdom said, “Using AI techniques, the system has the potential to automate initial patient diagnosis.

This can help our healthcare professionals work more efficiently with an increasing number of patients.” The project won second place at the 9th ICAT Tech-a-thon organized by the International Network for Appropriate Technology (INAT).

Future Plans

Upon graduation, Wisdom plans to apply his skills in design and automation to work for a company in manufacturing, mining, or automotive sectors in Zimbabwe or abroad. Another possibility is that Wisdom starts his own business and participates in the Solid Edge for Startups program.

We wish Wisdom success in the future and hope he continues to explore next-generation design technologies in Solid Edge. Note that any student enrolled in an academic institution and interested in learning Solid Edge can download the Solid Edge Student Edition for free here.
