USING SIMPLE CHANGE MANAGEMENT IN TEAMCENTER
Motivation for Using Simple Change Management
“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”
— Confucius —
When I wrote this blog, the first thing I thought of was the above quote because it inspires me to stay focused in both my personal and professional life. It also came to mind when looking at some software applications we use daily and sometimes asking ourselves, “Why does it have to be this complicated?”
There may be a good reason why some applications appear this way. It is usually due to the underlying business processes they are designed to support, which can be very complex. However, not all software makes life easier or helps us handle demanding tasks. I am sure many will agree that this is essentially the motivation behind a Simple Change Management process in Teamcenter.
Benefits of Change Management
Engineering change management is one of the core foundations of any PLM solution. Teamcenter provides one of the most comprehensive and robust change management capabilities for businesses, regardless of your organization’s change management strategy. By using the CMII-certified change process, Teamcenter customers can leverage industry best practices to track, process, report, and verify changes.
Engineering changes can impact product characteristics, require changes to expensive manufacturing tools, delay program schedules, and even disrupt production if not handled carefully. Therefore, a formal change process is necessary for high-impact engineering changes, and Teamcenter fully supports this with the required rigor.
Common Questions in Engineering Change Management
- What happens if a change is simple and needs tracking?
- What if you need to notify stakeholders about minimal changes?
- What happens if time is critical and you need to process a change quickly?
While there is no right or wrong answer to the above questions, we begin to consider a more fundamental question: “Should all changes be treated equally?” The answer should hopefully be NO.
Look at the image below and guess which changes would require the rigor and discipline of a formal change process versus those you consider simple changes.
If you answered that changes 1 and 3 require a formal change while 2 and 4 are candidates for simple change, you are correct. So, if changes come in different shapes and sizes, should change processes follow a single rule?
