DAIMLER TRUCK USES SIMCENTER TO OPTIMIZE VEHICLE DESIGN
Keeping Up with Demand
Daimler Truck AG is the world’s largest manufacturer of trucks and buses, leading markets in Europe, North America, and Asia. With 35 main offices globally and over 100,000 employees across multiple brands, technology is key to their collaboration and innovation.
As future markets demand autonomous and zero-emission vehicles, vehicle development becomes increasingly complex. Manufacturers must not only continue producing competitive conventional vehicles but also integrate fuel cells and electrified drivetrains.
Intelligent vehicles capable of autonomous driving or platooning also require additional electronics and sensors that must be optimized during design. As the market moves toward innovative and eco-friendly vehicles, manufacturers must stay up-to-date with trends while continuing to deliver traditional products.
Simulation Enables Innovation and Thermal & Fluid Design Optimization
In a recent survey of 177 manufacturers, research firm Tech-Clarity reported that 99% of companies realized benefits from using simulation to innovate and optimize designs faster. The study showed that the latest simulation software gives companies a competitive edge by enabling faster collaboration between teams, reducing testing and development time, and producing better products.
Top-performing companies are nearly twice as effective as others in product optimization processes. 74% reported that one of the benefits of using simulation is producing higher-quality products.
This is why Daimler Truck AG adopted Siemens Simcenter STAR-CCM+ software to transform its CAE development process into a complete Multiphysics digital twin environment.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ covers all aspects of thermal and fluid design, enabling engineers to consider multi-attribute trade-offs to minimize energy use while maintaining performance, ensuring efficient cooling for batteries and electronics. This includes analyzing vehicle drag, where more than 52% of fuel usage was reduced to the power needed to overcome wind resistance.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ reduces drag in design without compromising cooling or vehicle styling. Multiphase simulation also improves vehicle comfort by reducing dust on windows, mirrors, and sensors, enhancing visibility and autonomous system performance in harsh weather.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ Is More Than Software
Beyond software adoption, Siemens provided Daimler Truck with a dedicated support engineer to deploy Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and integrate it with existing systems and processes. This dedicated resource trains Daimler Truck engineers to become professional simulation experts designing the vehicles of the future. In addition to hands-on support, Simcenter Engineering Services delivers the latest simulation technologies and develops workflow automation tools to maximize design team efficiency.
Simcenter STAR-CCM+ is part of the Siemens Xcelerator Portfolio, which enables comprehensive digital transformation, integrating a complete digital twin with seven digital threads for multidisciplinary engineering, virtual validation, and continuous product and process improvement. Xcelerator provides customizable and scalable solutions to meet growing user needs.
“Siemens is proud to welcome Daimler Truck as the newest member of our expanding customer network,” said Edwin Severijn, Sr. VP and General Manager – EMEA, Siemens Digital Industries Software. “Digitalization is critical for sustainable industrial innovation in transportation, providing insights into real-world product performance. Simcenter STAR-CCM+ can drive innovation for a better future.”
